About this pay scale

STPCD (School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document) is the statutory framework governing teacher pay in England state-funded schools. The pay scales are recommended by the STRB (School Teachers' Review Body) following annual evidence-gathering, accepted (sometimes amended) by the Secretary of State for Education, and effective from 1 September each year. The 2026/27 award applies from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, and a further 3% is already agreed from 1 September 2027.

FAQ

When are the 2026/27 figures effective?
From 1 September 2026 (start of the academic year) to 31 August 2027. The STRB's 36th report recommended a two-year award, 3.5% from September 2026 and 3% from September 2027, and the government accepted both in July 2026. The STPCD 2026, which carries these scales, was published on 16 October 2026. Rates take effect on 1 September even when the uplift is paid later as arrears.
How do academies fit in?
Academies are legally exempt from STPCD but most follow it for simplicity. Some multi-academy trusts have bespoke pay scales (often higher than STPCD to attract/retain teachers). Free schools, sixth-form colleges, and independent schools also operate outside STPCD with their own arrangements.
Where can I find the original DfE document?
The "School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document and Guidance" is published annually by DfE at gov.uk after acceptance of the STRB report. NASUWT and NEU also publish the figures in a more digestible format; this calculator's numbers are derived from the NASUWT tables.
Did all teachers get a pay rise in September 2026?
Yes — the 2026 award raised every pay range (MPR, UPR, Leadership, Unqualified) by 3.5% across all four regional tables, with 5% on the minimum of the unqualified range outside London. TLR and SEN allowance ranges also rose by 3.5%. Schools fund the first 1% of the award from their existing budgets. The previous award, in September 2025, was 4%.
When do STPCD pay scales change?
On 1 September each year, for the academic year rather than the tax year. That means a teacher's pay year and tax year are offset by five months, which is why a September rise shows up in a part-year tax position.
Are these scales the same across the UK?
No. The STPCD covers England only. Wales has its own framework, Scotland uses the SNCT, and Northern Ireland has separate arrangements. The figures here are England, across the four STPCD regions.
